A WINCHESTER man has narrowly avoided prison for attacking two police officers.

Kevin Lambert, 36, pleaded guilty to assaulting Jules Agass and Kieran Darrington on March 18, as well as threatening behaviour and stealing three bottles of Prosecco, valued at £21 from the Co-op store on City Road, a court heard.

Lambert, of Hyde Gate, Hyde, also admitted failing to attend Basingstoke Magistrates Court on March 18.

Magistrates jailed him for three months but suspended the sentence for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay £50 compensation to officer Agass and £20 to officer Darrington.

There was no order for costs because of a lack of means.

The court record said the assaults were aggravated by the possible transmission of disease although no detail was given, and by Lambert's previous convictions.
