A car driver smashed into railings on a Winchester suburban road this afternoon.

The blue saloon crashed on Badger Farm Road near the junction with Oliver's Battery Road at around 2.45pm this afternoon.

The collision wrecked a section of railings and seriously damaged the front of the vehicle.

An eyewitness said a pedestrian narrowly escaped the railings that were sent flying by the impact.

Neighbour Nick Francis said: "The driver was travelling southbound and started to veer off to the pavement. He must have hit the railings at 30mph which caused an almighty bang - like a clap of thunder. All the airbags went off.

"The pedestrian was just approaching and the railings must have missed him a few feet. They landed on the grass verge about 10 feet away. The pedestrian looked shaken.

"The driver got out of the car almost immediately and looked to be ok though shaken. No obvious injuries. He and the pedestrian spoke for a few moments before the pedestrian continued walking. The driver examined his car then made a few calls. No other vehicles or people were involved. An ambulance, fire engine and police arrived fairly soon afterwards," added Mr Francis.

Hampshire Chronicle:

"One casualty was assessed and treated by SCAS paramedics as HIWFRS made the scene safe. Firefighters returned to station at 3.29pm."

A police spokesman said: "Police called at 3.01pm to reports of a single vehicle collision on Badger Farm Road. No injuries were reported."
