AN NHS worker who caught over the drink drive limit told police she had a glass of wine to help her sleep.

Stephanie Allen was driving an Alfa Romeo, on Winchester Road, Andover, on June 8 when she was stopped by police.

It was found that she had 66 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

At Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on Thursday (June 23) Allen, of Micheldever Road, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit.

The court heard how during a roadside breath test Allen told police she had a glass of wine to help her sleep.

In mitigation, David Shaw said that Allen is a woman of “good character” with no previous convictions.

He added: “She has also been working for the NHS for the past 20 years. She volunteered to be a vaccinator in her local community, and she has recently spent most of her time vaccinating.”

Magistrates disqualified Allen from driving for 12 months. She must also pay a £461 fine, a victim surcharge of £46 and court costs of £85.

The 59-year-old must also complete a drink driving course.
