THE new Romsey pub was delighted to bring home the paper’s Pub of the Year award.

Having only opened a week before Christmas the family run business has since been working hard. The traditional British pub prides itself on its quality of beer, wine and delicious American diner style food.

Liz Murray, The Nightingale’s owner and director said: “We were very excited to win. We’re a family run business, not a big chain or anything. We took the pub over just coming out of covid, which was a very risky move. We spent a lot of money and hard work and obviously it has paid off!”

The family received a poster saying they’d be shortlisted just three weeks ago. Since then, they’ve been busy asking regulars and people who come into the pub to vote for them.

The public were asked to vote on their ‘pub of the year’ in the Hampshire Chronicle and Romsey Advertiser by June 5.

The shortlist in addition to The Nightingale included: The Old House at Home, The William Walker, Boot Inn, Three Tuns, The Black Boy, Cocky Anchor, The Brickmakers, The Wykeham Arms, The Cricketers Inn, The Hyde Tavern and The Jolly Farmer.

As the lucky winners, The Nightingale received a bottle of prosecco and a certificate which now sits pride of place on the bar.

The family posted their success on Facebook where people were quick to comment “well deserved” and “congratulations”.

Before Liz and her daughter Fiona Woodley took over and before its long closure the pub predominantly served craft beer. Now, the family friendly pub welcomes all ages to enjoy their homemade selection of burgers, chicken wings and ribs.

Every lunchtime Monday-Friday the pub also offers an OAP meal. For the £7.50 senior citizens can get a main course and either a starter or a pudding.

Looking forward to the pub’s future Liz said: “It’s still early days at the moment but we’re looking to bring in quiz nights, roast nights and more jazz. We had a jazz band in the other week and that went down really well so definitely more of that.”
