I AM horrified at Winchester City Councils complete lack of interest in the Queens Jubilee celebrations. One, one-sided banner in the High Street and a few little bits by the Great Hall!

This is clearly not a money issue as bunting and flags abound on the internet at almost no cost. This then leaves the question why ? Is it a political statement or an attitude of complete indifference. It could of course be both! We have 40 councillors, a newly elected mayor and highly-paid permanent officers. What a disgrace!

I will be writing to Her Majesty offering my apologies for Winchester City Council, and to assure her that huge numbers of the population of Winchester do support her and the monarchy, even if this Council clearly does not. Thank you.

READ MORE: Lack of Platinum Jubilee bunting and flags in Winchester High Street is criticised

FOR most of its history Winchester was known as a Royalist city. Not that you’d notice it today. What a miserable lot our council have been over the Jubilee: the only signs of celebration come from individual businesses, and well done them. Celebration is good for business after all. But go to other places - in Test Valley, Wiltshire and Dorset for example - and the streets are cheerful, decked with flags and bunting. It can’t have cost a fortune and anyway this is a complete one-off - none of us of any age will probably see another Platinum Jubilee. Shame on the Puritan miseries at our council.

HOW many others Winchester residents like myself who are disgusted with our city council for failing to celebrate a once in a lifetime event like the Platinum Jubilee. They have failed the citizens of Winchester, no bunting and as far as I can make out no beacon either the council should be ashamed of themselves.

I spoke to some American tourists who came to the ancient capital as they were sure the city would go all out to celebrate. They were very disappointed as I’m sure many other visitors were. Some of the market traders put on a better show the cabinet should hang their heads in shame.
