Winchester streets got together today to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Despite many streets having parties planned for Sunday, some decided to celebrate early with their neighbours.

Three Winchester roads applied to the city council for road closures. They were Oliver's Battery Road North, Broad View Lane and Hyde Abbey Road.

In Oliver's Battery Road North, tables were set up outside each house, complete with a barbecue. In one front garden was a performance area with guitars and saxophones ready to be played.

One of the party organisers, Glynn Berry, said: “I have lived here for four years and it's a very friendly neighbourhood. There is a very strong community spirit here, people look after each other.”

Jill Welsh said: “I have lived here for 40 years. We always do something to celebrate big occasions such as VE Day and the previous jubilees. This is a very friendly street and a wonderful place to live.”

Graeme Wood said: “We enjoy having a community get-together. We're going to be having some music and country dancing. We had a vote from everyone saying that this was the best day to have it as people are not around at the weekend.”

In Broad View Lane, residents joined tables together and had Pomp and Circumstance blasting from a speaker to get into the party spirit. They even had a cardboard cutout of the Queen.

Jaqueline Warren said: “We decided today would be the best day to have it has we didn't want it to clash with other events. It's a great opportunity for us all to get together after the past three years.”

Hyde Abbey Lane had a couple of tennis courts drawn on the road complete with nets.

Neville Rose said: “It's been great people have been enjoying the sunshine. We've got a dog show, a bar and a raffle.”

The raffle was raising money for the charity Winchester Go LD, who support people with learning disabilities.

Betty Chadwick, from the charity, said: “I play tennis with Neville and he came to a talk I gave about the charity, so he invited me to the street party.”
