A Southampton man has been made to pay £1,000 after dumping waste along Lee Lane near Romsey.

Mark Pugh, 34, of Romsey Road, Southampton, threw tree branches and green waste out of the back doors of his van last November.

Mr Pugh’s actions were caught on one of the borough council’s covert cameras, which captured him reversing into the layby, opening the rear doors and driving off after throwing the waste out of his car.

After an investigation by TVBC, Mr Pugh admitted the offence when attending an interview.

He was fined £320, ordered to pay £649.40 in costs and a £34 victim surcharge at Southampton Magistrates Court.

Portfolio holder, councillor Nick Adams-King, said: “I don’t know how many times I can say this, but I will never tire of the message. Fly-tipping is not acceptable, and we will investigate every single case we find, or have reported to us. We have covert cameras in different locations that are always on the move, so the risk simply isn’t worth it.

“I’m grateful for the work of our officers in investigating this crime to ensure that it isn’t the taxpayer that has to foot the bill. Anyone who wants to speak to us about how they can get rid of their waste or general advice can do so by contacting our customer service teams on 01794 527700 or 01264 368000.”
