A BRITISH lighting and furniture retailer has opened in Winchester High Street after redeveloping the former RBS bank.

Holloways of Ludlow opened its doors in 67-68 High Street in April after CEO Mark Holloway found a gap in the market after seeing success in stores such as Bath, London and Kent.

Spanning over two floors and 3,500 sq ft, the showroom features over 70 furniture brands from Astep, Bocci, Cruso and Davide Groppi, where Mark, 50, from Ludlow spends one to two days per week in the Winchester branch to get to know his customers better.

He said: "The response has been incredible. People come in and say that Winchester has been missing the quality and it feels a huge hole in the retail landscape.

"We work with the very very top brands around the world with a Scandinavian focus, but lots of pieces we sell are design classics from the 20th century, hand made in Denmark, Spain, Italy or Sweden. And many have been designed by some of the most famous designers of the past century."

Mark travels around the world five or six times a year to meet with designers to select products and add them to the range.

He said: "It's lovely to be doing something that makes people smile and makes them excited. If people wanted those things people would have to go into London, but we bought London to peoples doorsteps."

Chris Bickle, director at Savills Southampton, said: “The letting to Holloways of Ludlow not only demonstrates the appeal of Winchester for luxury brands but also the relevance of physical High Street locations by providing a consumer experience. We have seen real positivity returning to the city centre after a very challenging period for many businesses.”
