TREE surgeons have been removing dead ash trees in Winchester city centre today (May 23).

The trees have been removed from Durngate, opposite The Willow Tree Pub.

A small crane cut the logs up and stored them in a trailer, ready to be taken away.

A tweet from Winchester City Council said: “We’ll be removing some dead Ash trees from Durngate on Monday May 23. The trees need to be removed because they pose a danger to the public.

“A crane will be parked in the parking area in Durngate Terrace opposite The Willow Tree pub. Apologies for any inconvenience.”

Ash dieback has become widespread across the district and this year ash tress have been felled

in number on Barfield Close in Winchester and on the A31 Alresford Road near Ladycroft.
