THERE is much to be glad about living in Hampshire but to drive, ride or cycle here is to spend time avoiding potholes.

A recent trip to Wiltshire shows that other counties, though not free of the problem, can do much better.

With summer ahead we might hope for repair activity on our roads but it seems that Hampshire County Council have set aside £50m to deal with the problem, currently estimated as needing £250m.

So most current ruts, holes, dips and depressions will have another winter to get worse in. And doubtless others will join them.
