Firefighters were called to a Hampshire village in the early hours of Monday morning after a bolt of lighting set fire to a telegraph pole.

The lighting struck the pole in Newtown Road, Awbridge in the midst of the storm at around 1.30am - causing the cables to arc.

Crews from Romsey attended the scene and extinguished the fire before leaving the incident in the hands of an electrical company shortly after 2.30am.

A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "Romsey firefighters were called to a fire at 1:30am this morning after a bolt of lightning struck a telegraph pole on Newtown Road in Awbridge, causing the attached cables to arc. 

"On arrival the fire was extinguished before the incident was left with the electrical company as firefighters returned to station at 2:36am."
