IT came as a shock to read in the local election literature from the Conservative Party that any decision to allow Southampton University to increase its presence in Winchester 'threatens to overrun our city with students' and 'destroy residential neighbourhoods'.
To those of us who very happily work with students in teaching or research, the language of being 'overrun', normally reserved for marauding invaders, foreigners or vermin, comes as a shock.
Even most Conservatives know that all the great cities of the world, bar none, enjoy enormous benefits from a vibrant student population: benefits of energy, vitality and diversity. Long may it remain so.
