A WINCHESTER man has been fined more than £1,000 for failing to help the police over a motoring offence.

But Alistair Ramus was spared a driving ban which was possible under the totting-up procedure because of the impact on his business and family, a court heard.

Ramus, 43, of Lankhills Road, failed to give information to Yorkshire police about the identity of a driver of 62-reg Mercedes believed to have committed an offence.

He had pleaded guilty under the single justice procedure at Humber Magistrates Court. Magistrates heard that regarding a ban there were mitigating circumstances: effect on reduction in staff, effect on mother, and financial implications on family.

Ramus was ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge and costs of £110. His licence was endorsed with six points. The fines must be paid by May 31.
