A WINCHESTER road has been reopened after the completion of footway works which saw it blocked off to the public for more than three months.

Wellhouse Lane, in Headbourne Worthy, was initially closed for 14 weeks on January 10 as part of plans to build a new footway under the railway bridge.

The work, which was carried out by developer Cala Homes, the company behind the nearby Kings Barton estate, was completed earlier this week, with the road officially reopened to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians on Tuesday.

Winchester City Councillor Jane Rutter said: “Residents of Headbourne Worthy, Kings Worthy and Kings Barton will be delighted to hear that Wellhouse Lane has reopened! There is now safe access through the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, and clear signage and lights for all low height traffic.”

Three children were left needing surgery for life-changing injuries in 2020 after the driver of a Stagecoach double decker crashed into the railway bridge in Wellhouse Lane, ripping off the roof of the bus in the process.

A further 12 pupils, who were on their way to Henry Beaufort Secondary School, were injured during the ordeal.

The driver, Martin Robert Walker, 36, was jailed for three years after being found guilty of three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
