WINCHESTER is full of highly rated fish and chip shops and restaurants, but with so many to choose from, which one does the best?

Reporter Harvey Lindsay recently visited five of Winchester's best fish and chip shops, according to TripAdvisor, and rated them, all in the name of research, of course.

The fish and chip shops and restaurants that scored the highest were:

1) Shoal, High Street

Shoal has been rated one of the best fish and chip restaurants in Hampshire, and I can see why. The restaurant looks great and feels cosy while dining in, it's clean, tidy and modern, staff are attentive, chef’s are friendly and knowledgeable and the food is delicious. Plus, meals come with all you can eat chips. Chef's also make everything from scratch, from the sauces, scotch eggs to the gelato. Highly recommended for a treat, a date or even a takeaway.

2) Rick Stein, High Street

Eating at Rick Stein was a pleasurable experience and gave a great meaning for eating fish and chips in a finer dining setting. The cod came well served with the right amount of chips and I had to make a point of complimenting the tartar sauce, which was made fresh, in-house. The restaurant is spacious and staff are friendly and helpful.

3) Forte Kitchen, Parchment Street

Forte Kitchen offers a relaxed atmosphere and resembles more of a place for a quiet cup of coffee than a restaurant, which is why I was pleasantly surprised when the food was brought out well prepared, with thick cut chips acting as a base for the cod, which came a lot fuller than the typical cod served from the chippy. The food was well cooked and came as a nicely sized portion.

4) Catch Fish and Chips, St George's Street

A proper traditional fish and chip takeaway based on St George's Street. It offers a large menu with quick service. Whether you take away or eat in, meals come with great chip portions and the fish is a good size.

5) City Fish Bar & Kebab, Jewry Street

City Fish Bar & Kebab, based on Jewry Street has a large menu and is served quick. The fish bar offer a take away or dine in service, with stalls set up at the front of the shop. Staff are helpful and portions come as a good size.
