A HAMPSHIRE pub has been slammed with a new one-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

The Railway Inn in Station Hill, Botley was given the score after assessment on February 22, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

A score of one means a major improvement is necessary.

Winchester City Council is due to send the full food hygiene report in the coming days.

Owner and manger Alice Blackman said: "We have appealed as a lot of stuff they said wasn't true but we have changed the things that could be changed.

"They said the hand basin wasn't clean. I said it has just been serviced and she wrote down that it was dirty after it had just been used.

"The garden wasn't sparkling clean but we have completely cleaned it. We use a cleaning check list and deep clean three times a week. We also jet wash the garden."

Hampshire Chronicle:

Alice said she feels she hasn't been able to focus on the upkeep due to being short staffed.

Alice and her family acquired the pub in 2015.

She said: "We're under immense pressure daily but we are doing our best to change it."

Alice admitted to the things that could have been improved, like chopping boards that were scored, plastic had come off of cooking tongs and the kitchen being cluttered.

Labels weren't marked on the products in the fridge, the ice machine needed a deep clean, there was no hand sanitiser in the kitchen and a chef did not own chef whites

She said: "Nothing shouted that we should have a bad score. We're really really shocked. We're disgusted with the score."
