A CHARITY in Southampton has been teaching new construction skills to youths in the city, whilst also helping them build a new skills centre.

Solent Youth Action is a youth provision charity that works with vulnerable young people aged 10-25 across the South of Hampshire to help them contribute to their local community, participate in positive youth-led projects and engage in social activities.

The Routes Skills Centre at 1 Horton Heath is being developed by Solent Youth Action and will act as a centre where vulnerable young people can learn new skills and acquire new qualifications. The construction site was recently damaged by Storm Eunice, however volunteers have not let that stop construction.

“If you know of a young person who would benefit from some fresh air, hands on practical tasks and loves Hot Chocolate then send them our way!” Solent Youth Action said about the site.

Kailea Hurcombe, 36, chief executive officer of Solent Youth Action, said: “We want young people to gain construction skills as well as admin skills.

“We want to teach work based skills. Its very much still a construction site but the dream is that 2 or 3 years down the line they’ll also be able to do horticulture, cooking and other skills too. There will be a foresting school and an outdoor kitchen.”
