Farm shops, butchers and businesses pick up awards as Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie competition returns

Four of the butchers at Westlands Farm Shop, near Wickham, each put forward their own secret recipe for the tastiest bangers in the south in the competition run by Hampshire Fare - and they all won gold awards for their entries.

All four award-winning sausages will be available to taste for anyone visiting the Westlands Farm Shop in Shedfield this weekend.

The butchers worked on their secret recipes over a few weeks before finally submitting their best bangers to the judges at Hampshire Fare.

The winning flavours were Pork and Porter, Chilli Cheese and Pork, Honey and Mustard Pork, and Farmhouse Pork.

Farm shop owner Graham Collett said: “We know we have a great butchery team at Westlands, but this shows that they are also dab hands at creating really tasty sausages too.

“The pandemic has meant there have not been as many competitions where our butchers can show off their skills and abilities so it is great to see these sorts of food awards coming back.

“I am really proud of the whole of the butchery team for this - they submitted four sausages, one each, and they all won Gold. You can’t get better than that."

The win was part of the annual Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie competition which took place on March 9.

Organised by county food group Hampshire Fare, the nationally esteemed competition has returned, after a year’s break, with new categories and a new venue, St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton.

Despite a year’s absence, entries to the competition were higher than ever with 243 entries.

Tracy Nash, commercial manager, Hampshire Fare, said: “The competition’s return has seen a fantastic number of entries from so many businesses, including many who hadn’t entered before."

Damon and Sadie Buckingham of Buckingham’s Artisan Butchery in West Meon landed the top title of Supreme Champion for their alternative sausage made of chicken, lemon and tarragon

They moved out of London to open a butchery in West Meon in March 2020, just as the first lockdown was put in place.

Damon said: “I am blown away to have won Supreme Champion the first time we’ve entered and with a non-pork product."

Competition regulars Newlyn’s Farm Shop of North Warnborough, near Hook, did well being named as double champions. They won the Hampshire Sausage category for their pork, honey and mustard sausage, as well as the new scotch egg category, also picking up a total of 16 gold awards.

Jason Moore of Newlyn’s Farm Shop said: “This success is testament to the team."
