They said: "The predominantly Georgian, family house of 17th century origin, is one of Winchester’s finest private residences. It’s located in the heart of the city with views of the eastern facade of the cathedral. Mulberry House is believed to have been named after a Mulberry Tree that was planted in the rear garden by Charles II."

Charles II, who reigned from 1660 to 1685, was fond of Winchester and planned to build a palace to rival Versailles on the site of what is now Peninsula Barracks. Construction stopped on his death.

While the tree no longer remains at the property, it has been extended and renovated by the current owners and comes with an indoor gym.

"Perhaps the most impressive element of the house is the magnificent ‘orangery style’ kitchen extension, which allows greater enjoyment of the garden and cathedral view. The extensive accommodation is arranged over three floors with the additional benefit of a large cellar. There is a one bedroom, integral, attached cottage, which could be utilised for staff or accommodation for dependant relatives."

The garden has been designed by gold medal winners at Chelsea Flower Show, Hilliers of Romsey and comes with a terrace which extends from the rear of the house and surrounds a stocked and tended shrub and flower beds. This leads on to a pergola covered barbecue and Jacuzzi area, incorporating a fire pit and American stainless steel barbecue.

"There is a summerhouse and the gardens are walled with substantial Grade II Listed brick walls which add to the privacy, security and charm of the setting. From the terrace a pathway leads through a large hedgerow to a substantial parking and turning area with adjacent triple garage and security gates leading out onto Symonds Street. The gardens are automatically irrigated and there is a sophisticated garden lighting scheme."
