A COMMUNITY boxing event in Southampton is being organised to raise money for a local charity.
The event is being organised in partnership with Jack Bishop Boxing Academy and Soxy Boxing Stable, with sponsorship from businesses.
Funds raised are being donated to Sophia's House, a charity that supports children with autism.
Mechanical engineer and boxing coach, Richard Martin, 40, is one of the organisers of the charity event in honour of Sophia's House.
He said: “We’re a local independent club, supported by local businesses, raising money for local charity.
"There will be a table on the night for Sophia’s House.
"We raise between £800 and £1200 per event and we try to have events at least 3 times a year. Every little helps."
“There will be nine competitive bouts on the night.
"There will also be skills bouts for children, we’ve opened guest slots for less fortunate kids from other clubs so they can get a taste of being under the bright lights.
"Under 16s will have to wear headgear and 16 oz gloves for insurance reasons. We try to keep it local, keep it friendly."
The event is also in honour of club founder Jack Bishop, who sadly died five years ago.
He said: “Jack Bishop was a World War Two veteran, member of the parachute regiment and army boxer who started the Jack Bishop Boxing Academy.
"Pros and amateurs in Southampton trained there. Jack was known as ‘Mr Boxing’ and everyone looked up to him.
"The family have kindly left the gym to us. He passed away about five years ago, the man did everything for the community."
Talking about how it feels to organise the event, Richard said: “All lads are training hard to put on a great show. Times are hard so always appreciate people paying hard-earned money.
"Boxing saves people. You come in with any frustrations and soon lose them, it humbles you and you feel exhausted but you’ve still got a smile on.
"Boxing’s a community sport for everyone, we appreciate the community support."
The event will be held on March 27 at Sarisbury Green Social Club. Doors open at 12pm.
Tickets cost £30 to be seated ringside or £25 for standard entry.
