Members of a village speedwatch group have revealed the speeds cars are travelling on two country roads.

Twyford Community Speedwatch recorded cars over two-week periods on Manor Farm Green, northbound, and Shawford Road, westbound.

Residents expressed their concerns about the speed of traffic and the danger for pedestrians on narrow pavements.

This resulted in the purchase of several “speed limit reminder” units by Colden Common and Twyford parish councils. They are deployed at sites approved by Hampshire County Council for up to three weeks before they must be relocated.

Winchester City Councillor, Sue Cook, said: “Speedwatch is extremely important as it’s really not about attempting to catch as many motorists as we can but there have been some mornings when we have registered just the one motorists travelling in an excess speed. It’s making people aware as the unit displays their speed and many are actually travelling in excess of the 30mph speed limit.

“I wish that the police would allow us to stand in other areas but they require to give us permission and despite the many motorists that glare at us and on some occasions even making rude heathers and shouting out there is actually a very positive action here and it’s all about this. We all need to slow down!

“From Hockley to the beginning of the 40mph as you drive from the Hockley Golf Club should be 40mph from the lights then 20mph all the way out to Manor Farm Green then 40mph towards Colden Common.”

The data the group collected show, on Manor Farm Green, showed that one driver recorded as travelling at 80mph on June 6 at 4.15am.

Between February 2 and 16, they recorded a total of 85,627 vehicles. The average speed was 27.6mph with the top speed recorded at 70mph on February 3 at 4.15am.

On Shawford Road, during the same period, 14,456 vehicles were recorded. The average speed was clocked at 27.3mph with the highest speed at 55mph on February 3 at 10.45pm.

Peter and Maggie Lippiett, of Pax Lodge, Twyford, are part of the community group. They said: “Cars, lorries and buses thunder past us, and we know that they've just been through our village with its pedestrians, especially the very old and very young, being very vulnerable.

“They can't just nip across the road in front of traffic! We argued for ages for a limit outside our house, and eventually were granted a 40 mph, but can see how little it's observed.

“It's difficult for us and our neighbours to get our cars out into the road - and we try to cross it with our grandchildren to take them into the playground opposite us.

“Speedwatch is not there primarily to 'catch' people: it's there to remind, warn and deter speeders through our village.”
