A pancake race outside Winchester Cathedral saw over 30 teams braved the wet conditions to raise money for charity.

Teams gathered in the cathedral's Outer Close, representing businesses, charities, churches and other organisations from Winchester for the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race, organised by Winchester Rotary.

It was won by a team of choristers from the Pilgrims' school with home construction company Millgate finishing second.

Cllr Jane Rutter was part of the Super Mayors team. She said: “It's my fourth time doing it. I didn't do the virtual one, but I have done all the real ones. We are the Super Mayors, so we're all either mayors or past majors. However, one of our past mayors is too poorly so we've got a ringer, Cllr Learney.”

After his race, Steve Haskey from IBM's team said: “That was partly embarrassing, exhilarating and was all a bit odd. On a Tuesday, I don't normally dress as a bear. We're from IBM, the international bear machines!”

The boys from the winning chorister team said: “It was really fun.”

Karen Hazlitt, chair of the trustee of Friends of the Family, said: “This year, we are the Rotary president's charity of the year. We're hoping to raise about £1,000 from this event today. Considering the weather, I think it had been a really good turnout. They've got over 30 team which is fantastic. It's so lovely just to be able to do events again and to interact with other charities and businesses. I did the virtual race last year in my kitchen.”
