Winchester’s Cathedral bell ringers were back in action yesterday to musically mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

On the same day, seventy years ago in 1952, Winchester’s cathedral bells were ringing to celebrate the Queen’s accession.

Seventy years on, tower captain Nick Bucknall led the band in sequences including ‘Kings’ to commemorate the passing of King George VI, followed by ‘Queens’ in acknowledgement of the Queen’s jubilee.

Winchester was one of hundreds of towers across the country, who rang especially for the royal occasion.

Members of the current band rang a Quarter Peal of Plain Bob Minor conducted by ringing master Michael Hopkins Till to honour this unique anniversary of Britain’s longest reigning monarch.
