A MAN in his 20s was killed on a Hampshire road, the police said today.

Officers are appealing for information following a road traffic collision on the A3M near Havant.

At around 8.15pm yesterday officers were called to reports of a serious collision on the southbound carriage between junctions 2 and 3. Several cars were involved and a man.

The man, aged in his 20s, was pronounced at the scene.

His next of kin have been told and specially trained officers are being deployed to support them.

The road was closed in both directions while officers carried out their investigations and the northbound carriage was re-opened earlier this morning.

Officers have now completed their investigations at the scene and the Highways Agency are working to get the southbound carriageway re-opened as soon as possible but this is likely to take several hours.

Sergeant Steve Phillips, said: “We’re currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and are appealing for information. We’ve spoken to numerous witnesses and we’re keen to speak to anyone else who was in the area around the time. Did you see anything you think could be connected to this incident?

“I would urge anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact us as soon as possible on 101 quoting 44220051672.”

Motorists were urged to avoid a busy Hampshire road after a serious crash closed both carriageways.

Both carriageways between Junction 2 Dell Piece Interchange (Havant, Lovedean B2149) and Junction 3 Waterlooville Interchange (Waterlooville, Havant B2150) were closed and police are advising that the southbound carriageway is likely to stay closed throughout Monday (January 7).

Motorists are being asked by police to take an alternative route.

Inspector Matt Moss, force incident manager at Hampshire Constabulary, posted on Facebook: "You may have seen our earlier post in relation to the A3(M) being shut in both directions between junctions 2 and 3 as a result of an ongoing incident. Unfortunately this incident is taking a significant amount of time to deal with, and as such the road is still closed.

"The latest update I have is that we may be able to get the northbound carriageway open by 0600, however it is likely that the southbound carriageway will be closed past the morning rush hour and well into tomorrow. If you are reading this as you wake up on Monday morning please plan your journey accordingly and consider whether you need to allow for extra time - diversions are in place."

Police thanked people for their patience and said said they would update people once the road is re-opened.

Traffic service Inrix said the southbound carriageway reopened at around 6am this morning.
