SIR: I write to draw attention to a worthy enterprise in the centre of Winchester which seems to have not been mentioned in the local press. It is the bookshop sited in the lower level of the Brooks Centre by the Global Education Trust charity.

The object of the Trust is to encourage ,support and promote literacy. More information is available on their website http://www.globaleducationaltrust.org/.

The premise of the shop is that their stock of books are offered to the public for free in return for a voluntary donation to the charity. They are grateful for donations of books, shelving and of course of a financial nature.

The shop is in vacant premises near Primark and has been in operation since last August. It is managed by Mark and his fellow friendly and helpful volunteers and is open from 10am to 4pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

There is an additional benefit that donated books are saved from being destroyed and being sent for pulping. Stock of books is wide ranging and in very good condition. It is a heart warming sight to find people of all ages from lifelong ageing bibliophiles like myself down to the little ones looking at their first picture and story books all united by the delight that the love of books can bring.

There is something there for everyone and in my opinion is a worthwhile cause deserving to be better known.

Edward Hopper,

Brassey Road,

Fulflood,

Winchester
