WINCHESTER City Council has revealed the current locations of cameras placed at locations where fly-tipping regularly occurs.

It came as the council was asked what action it was taking when it comes to surveillance of known fly-tipping areas.

Cllr Susan Cook lodged the question which was published ahead of a meeting of the full council.

Cabinet member for communities and wellbeing Cllr Angela Clear said: “In common with many other local authorities Winchester has seen an increase in fly-tipping during the Covid pandemic, as the amount of household waste increases, and restrictions on access, which still exist in Hampshire, were applied to household waste recycling centres.

“The clearance of fly-tipping is included in the IDV grounds maintenance and street cleansing contract, however due to the increased fly tipping volumes the city council has contracted IDV for additional collections and clearances at circa £6,000 per month.”

The council has revealed the current locations of surveillance, they are: Morestead Road, Chidden, Pigeon House Lane, A31 laybys, Widley Walk, Old Mill Lane, Crawley lay-bys and Hambledon B2150 lay-by.

Data from from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) highlighted that in 2020-21, 2,120 incidents were reported to Winchester City Council – a rise of almost 95 per cent from the previous year – and the highest number of cases recorded since comparable records began in 2012-13.
