THE Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, paid a pastoral visit to Winchester Cathedral on Sunday.

In addition to presiding over the Eucharist service and preaching the sermon, Archbishop Welby performed a short ceremony with the Bishops of Southampton and Basingstoke, the Rt Rev Debbie Sellin and the Rt Rev David Williams, and two other associate bishops, which represented a reaffirmation of commitment to their work in the Winchester diocese.

The Archbishop also officiated at a ceremony with the Friends of Winchester Cathedral when their chairman, Bruce Parker, laid a wreath at the foot of the Duke of Connaught’s memorial in the north aisle.

The Duke, Queen Victoria’s third son, was the first royal patron of the Cathedral Friends, and last Sunday was the eightieth anniversary of his death in 1942, as reported in the Chronicle last week.

The Queen is the present royal patron of the Friends and last year sent a congratulatory message to them on their 90th anniversary.
