THE buses of yesteryear have again been dusted off to evoke a long-lost age on the streets of Winchester.

The annual New Year's running of King Alfred's Buses drew young and old from across the region.

Every year the Friends of King Alfred's Buses (FoKAB) bring out a number of vehicles that once worked the routes of the company until it closed in 1973.

Many pensioners took the chance to enjoy the experience of again travelling on the draughty and noisy vehicles as they wheezed their way along the old routes around the city. Children enjoyed the sensation of the old vehicles. "The bus, it vibrates, like it's alive," said one nine-year old on her first vintage bus ride.

The charity's biggest event is now in May partly because January is often too cold for the old engines, although this year the weather was mild.
