STARS of the popular Netflix series The Crown were spotted filming in Winchester yesterday (Monday).

Crews for the streaming giant’s drama were seen in the city filming on Kingsgate. According to one passer-by actors playing Princess Diana and Prince Charles were being filmed in a Jaguar XJ8.

The scenes are believed to be being filmed for series five of The Crown, out in November next year.

The show last came to Winchester in January 2020 when production was set up at the cathedral to shoot two films - the funeral of Lord Mountbatten and Charles and Diana's wedding.

In 2018 filming took place at the Guildhall and in January 2016 it also shot several scenes of early shows in the Winchester College area around the Wykeham Arms.

Today the show has been filming in Basingstoke. Dozens of trailers, lorries and coaches have been parked up at Lower Basing View Car Park next to Mountbatten House, which has been used for filming twice this year already.

Last week the series was spotted filming in Eastbourne featuring an actor bearing striking resemblance to Martin Bashir, the disgraced former BBC journalist who previously lived in Winchester.

According to the Daily Mail, actor Prasanna Puwanarajah was filming scenes for the Netflix drama that recreate the time of Bashir’s deceitfully arranged a Panorama interview with Princess Diana in 1995.

The Crown has been successful with awards, and its wins include the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Television Series and the Satellite Award for Best Drama Television Series.

Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman have also scooped the Screen Actor's Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for their roles.
