THE latest set of improvements to a popular Hampshire beauty spot are said to be "well underway".

Eastleigh Borough Council says the most recent work to improve Hiltingbury Lakes in Chandler's Ford is continuing in a bid to return the site to its "former glory".

Approved by the Environment Agency, the work by the council alongside contractors, B&M McHugh Ltd, includes essential maintenance work to the footpaths, bridges and waterways

Over the past few weeks fences have been replaced around the lower ponds and the large bridge by the main lake has now been removed.

This means that the main walkway through the centre of the site remains closed along the southern edge of the lake and the new bridge will be installed in the coming weeks.

The new bridge will have new wooden decking boards and handrails and provide views across the lake.

A council spokesperson said the authority is "working to get this completed in time for Christmas".

In Summer 2022, contractors are set to return to site to carry out further works to the footpath around the western side of the lower ponds to improve surfacing and carry out further drainage works.
