SIR: When an established business is forced to close its shop in Winchester because of high rents and anti-enterprise business rates, there is something seriously wrong. High business rates alone have a negative impact.
SIR: A local business such as Dinghams contributes more to the city than providing cooking utensils and accompanying expertise. Dinghams employs staff who will lose their jobs.
The company pays rent to Winchester City Council and business rates. The company is a net 'giver'.
The council should do its duty and negotiate a solution rather than having another empty shop.
I have the impression that civic chiefs are so far removed from the reality of running a small business, they are prepared to lose a viable and popular shop.
As for the other businesses to be evicted in Kings Walk, the council seems to be feeding on bad vibes.
I strongly suggest the council act before it is too late.
