PLANS to extend a Winchester Victorian terraced house have been approved by city councillors.

Freddy and Sophie Beer applied for the enlargement of Habayita on St Faith’s Road in St Cross, sparking 12 objections from seven properties.

Objectors included the City of Winchester Trust and also the historic environment officer at the city council who said it was out of keeping.

But the planning committee heard that many of the houses had already been extended in similar ways.

Planning officer Rose Lister told the committee: “The harm had already been done. I don’t consider this would be out of keeping with the rear elevations in the terrace already.”

Mrs Beer told the committee: “We have a desire to develop in line with other properties in the area to increase our living and storage space for a growing family of four. Both attend the local school.”

Committee chairman Therese Evans said: “If you look at the back of all these properties they have nearly all been developed, mainly up. In my personal opinion I can’t say this demonstrates any more harm than what has gone on, and has got permission.”

Cllr Jane Rutter agreed: “The harm has been done, so long as the front street scape is retained.”

Councillors followed the officer’s recommendation and approved the application.
