GLOBAL environmental movement Extinction Rebellion took to the streets of Winchester on Saturday to highlight the fossil-fuel Investments made by high street banks.

Climate crime scenes were staged outside both Barclays and HSBC to bring this to the public's attention.

Protesters held signs that read: "funding fossil fuels is therefore criminal", "is your bank making a killing out of the planet?" and "we are in a climate crisis".

Mike Nell from the group said: "The United Nations has declared code red for humanity due to the rapidly evolving climate and ecological crisis, so it is simply unacceptable for financial institutions to be investing in fossil fuels.

"An investment in fossil fuels is an investment in death. Barclays and HSBC are the UK's biggest investors in fossil fuels, having invested over £150bn in the last five years according to the respected BankTrack organisation.

"We're asking the public to bank green, to use the power of their money to create positive change. Nowadays there are many institutions that offer fossil-free banking. We urge the people of Winchester to consider switching to help prevent climate and ecological destruction."
