THE South Downs Way abandoned puppies have been moved to a dog rescue charity.

It is the first step for the young dogs to be found permanent homes.

The Chronicle revealed how seven canines were found on the footpath near Cheesefoot Head on Wednesday October 13 by cyclist Rob Carter. An eighth was found near Alresford Golf Club the following Sunday. None were microchipped or wearing collars.

They were taken to Three Oaks Boarding Kennels near Bishop's Waltham where they are said to have thrived. The kennels provides the stray dogs service for Winchester City Council

How and why they got to the South Downs Way is unclear and the police have had no reports of theft.

Today a city council spokesman said: "The eight puppies that were abandoned have come on in leaps and bounds over their week with us. They put on weight and grew healthier, happier and naughtier by the day.

"They have been sent to a dog rescue charity where they all have foster homes waiting for them. They will need to be assessed, rehabilitated and prepared for the time when they will be ready to go to a new home. The charity has asked not to be named as there is a lot of work to do before the puppies will be ready for rehoming.

"We are very grateful to the public for their enquiries and concern for the puppies and for those who donated blankets, food and toys to help with their care."
