SIR: A church is the centre if a community providing a meeting of like-minded people to gather together for prayer and friendliness in a united‎ belief.

Churches are ideal for social gatherings and events where individuals can engage and enjoy harmony, friendship and kindness.

As for St. Luke's Church structural issues, Winchester Cathedral is 1,000 years old, but often, 1960s and especially 1970s structures have a very short life-span.

What is required for the good of the community is a new church of a size that reflects the number of worshippers. It should also be of a more gentle design (Chronicle October 14).

A community centre; perhaps close to a new church would be ideal. Although Badger Farm has an excellent, successful community centre, the nearest church is in Oliver's Battery which also provides community activities.

Replacing St. Luke's church with affordable housing is an admirable plan, but there must be assurance that a church be built as soon as feasible and a design which reflects a place of worship.
