SIR: While some are floating the idea of a Lido, as with other proposals it goes nowhere near thinking outside the box (Chronicle, October 7).

What is needed is imaginative 'big thinking' to grasp the opportunity to really put Winchester on the national map with a national conference centre, a helipad, hotel and restaurant.

That will broadcast that Winchester is here for political and business conferences, exhibitions and the like, bringing national attention to Winchester and money into the local economy. Scrap everything and begin again.

SIR: Regarding the call for a lido on the site of River Park Leisure centre (Chronicle, October 7), I would like to point out that the swimming pool at River Park is suspended above ground, due to, I believe, there being an ancient burial ground there. This is what I was led to believe when I worked at the centre!

SIR: Re the Lido: This is a plan that all parties should support to make it a reality.

The word 'Lido' is derived from a resort outside Venice, where there ‎there was a 'beach' pool.

Lidos are often filled with salt water. Easier for beginners to stay afloat and is hygienic.

Personally, I think it is a splendid idea. Open air swimming is becoming more popular and indeed healthy. On a recent walk around Winnall Moors, there were few people swimming in the River Itchen.

Let us hope that al parties in WCC and HCC will work together to make this idea a reality.
