SIR: Every week there are articles and letters questioning the validity and desirability of building upon natural, greenfield open spaces. I would normally address one specific issue, but there are now a number plans which essentially destroy our precious natural environment (Chronicle September 23).
For example, Royaldown, South Winchester Club and John Moore Barracks.
The controversial plans for a multi-story car-park park at Barfield Close, Bar End, where construction has already started, regardless of protests by residents. It would seriously impose (visual; lighting, extra hight vehicle and noise polution) upon a currently placid environment.
We must stand firm against such environmentally destructive plans. Winchester is possibly unique in being surrounded by Natural Beauty; hills, rivers, downland, water meadows.
We must not take this for granted.
