RACE for Life returned to Winchester today after a two-year break.

Nearly 150 people took part to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

For the first time the socially distanced 3K and 5K races were held at North Walls Recreation Ground rather than the Garrison Ground, Bar End, which has now been developed for a new sports centre.

Organiser Joe Hutchinson said the 140 taking part was down on the 550 people who ran in 2019, the last time the event was held before the Covid pandemic.

He said of the drop in numbers: "It is partly the impact of Covid with a reluctance to get out; we have to make sure the Race for Life brand comes back into the public sphere.

"Winchester is always one of our quieter events as it competes with events like Southampton and Pretty Muddy. But the fact we were able to put it on is a success in my eyes.

"Having it at North Walls worked really well. The atmosphere around the cricket pitches was really pleasing."

Across the UK the Race for Life runs in August have raised £2.7 million.

He added: "I want to say thanks to everyone who took part and the volunteers who helped. Without them it doesn't happen, so thank you".

Entries are open for the 2022 Winchester event. People can visit raceforlife.org to enter or call 0300 123 0770.
