GOALKEEPER Fraser Forster has reportedly turned down a new deal at Saints.

The 33-year-old has a year remaining on his current deal at St Mary’s but according to The Scottish Sun, he has rejected a new “cut-price contract” with the south coast side.

Forster played a key role in helping Saints reach the FA Cup semi-finals last season, before they were knocked out by eventual winners Leicester City.

Ralph Hasenhuttl also gave the Hexham-born keeper eight appearances in the Premier League, as he opted to rotate with Alex McCarthy towards the end of the campaign.

The report from the Scottish Sun details how Saints want to reportedly reduce his money down to £70,000 per week.

Keeper Forster has been linked with a return to Celtic this summer, having had four previous spells at Parkhead.

He signed for Saints from Celtic back in August 2014 and has made 115 league appearances for the St Mary’s outfit.

At present, both Forster and McCarthy have one year left on their current deals – although the latter is reportedly in talks to be extending his stay at St Mary’s.

Speaking to the Daily Echo about his plans for the keepers at the end of last season, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “I think both still have one year left on their contracts and I expect both to stay, going into next season with a battle in pre-season for who is then allowed to start.

“If you are allowed to start it doesn’t mean you also end up in the season as a number one.

“I want to have this battle. I want to have two goalkeepers that are competing for this position.

“That should normally lead to a better performance from everybody.”
