AN Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for Southampton - the first ever issued by The Met Office in the UK.

The amber warning, which covers the city, Hampshire and also most of the south, was issued from 4.05pm on Monday.

The warning will stay in place until 11.59pm on Thursday.

They warned: "High temperatures both by day and night will continue this week leading to public health impacts."

The warning on The Met Office website continued: "The wider population are likely to experience some adverse health effects including sunburn or heat exhaustion (dehydration, nausea, fatigue) and other heat related illnesses."

"An increased chance that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, leading to power cuts and the loss of other services to some homes and businesses

"Some delays to road, rail and air travel are possible."

There is also a separate Yellow warning for thunderstorms covering the South East until 7pm tonight (July 19.)
