THE ANXIETIES over whether to risk an overseas holiday this summer has all but melted away as we bask in a spell of sunshine that would rival any of the Costas.
Between deciphering the meanings of the traffic light system of choosing a destination, worrying about the sudden turnarounds that have marked this whole pandemic, and could leave holidaymakers having to rush home of face quarantine or isolation has made planning a holiday a much trickier business than it has ever been.
But as these photos show, there is plenty to be enjoyed here.
Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre in partnership with Copeland council are offering free family swims, for instance.
These start on July 26 and run until Friday August 27. The free swims are for two adults and two children over three or one adult and three children over three.
We are on the edge of the Lake District in an area that holiday makers from other parts of the country and the world flock to see.
We have beautiful beaches, plenty of activities and, of course and plenty of room to breathe as these photos show.
Taken by photographers over the years, we see that these last few days have not been an aberration. There has been plenty of sunshine to spread around.
From 2006 on, we see how people celebrated then and wonder where they are now.
If there is one taste of summer to beat all others it is, of course, ice cream. Note the long line waiting to buy an ice cream from a van at St Bees Beach in 2015.
It was taken in May 2010 “as temperatures soar across the county.”
The interesting thing about this picture, though, is that it could have been taken this summer or last as the people in the queue are practising very disciplined social distancing!
Some of the photos show summer activities including a sand art competition in 2015 and a summer football school.
No need to go abroad for the sunshine and fun times this year. We have got it all right here - at leat until the forecast changes.
