COACH movements through Winchester city centre could be reduced and additional parking spaces provided under new council plans.

Winchester City Council is currently consulting on plans to provide more coach spaces at South Winchester Park and Ride.

The proposal would see coaches use The Broadway as a drop off and then head to the park and ride via the motorway, instead of travelling to the existing coach park at Worthy Lane. In total 12 coach spaces would be provided.

The works have been earmarked for a number of years as part of a £2.4 million scheme to improve car parks across the district.

The programme has previously been met with mixed support from opposition councillors, but concerns were raised about the amount of money that is earmarked for the major programme of works.

A city council spokesman said: "The proposed coach parking at South Winchester Park & Ride is part of the Winchester Movement Strategy. The objective is to reduce traffic congestion in the city centre and improve air quality by providing at an alternative coach parking location. Coaches will not have to pass through the city centre to access the Worthy Lane coach park, however there will still be a drop off point and coach parking.”
