WINCHESTER College museum re-opens its doors to the public on Monday June 21.

The attraction, known as ‘The Winchester College Treasury’, will once again be open seven days a week from 2-4pm. Entry is free and there is no need to book, but social distancing measures will be in place.

While the museum has been closed to visitors through the lockdown, the team has been working to enhance its online offering, which now includes an advanced 3D tour of its galleries. For the first time, visitors can navigate through the museum virtually, getting up close to artefacts and reading about their history.

Treasury will re-open with a special exhibition, curated by pupils of the school: An Age of Exploration, 1400-1600. This exhibition looks at European voyages in the 15th and 16th centuries, and how they changed the world. A combination of art, artefacts, navigational tools, and books from the Middle Ages onwards explores the intellectual and artistic culture of Europe before and after the voyages, and shows what made global travel possible.

On permanent display in Treasury are the school’s collections of art and archaeology, including artefacts from Egypt, Greece and Rome, Chinese ceramics from the Tang to Qing dynasties, and works of art from the medieval College.

The museum is housed in the Warden’s Stables, accessed from the main entrance to the school on College Street. There is a comprehensive multimedia guide available and children can follow the free Treasury Trail.
