A POP-UP Mexican restaurant founded in lockdown has itself a permanent home in Winchester.

Mi Cocina, a takeaway service that has become hugely popular over the past year, will open in The Square from June 10.

It will be serving authentic Mexican small plate dishes alongside a selection of handpicked cocktails that originate from the country.

Joe Fellows, Director of The Square said: "We are delighted to be collaborating with Mi Cocina. We are looking forward to serving their delicious Mexican food at The Square.

"It is an exciting time for our business and our customers after a difficult year for the hospitality industry. We’d like to thank Winchester City Council for granting us a new licence which has enabled us to give Mi Cocina a new permanent home at The Square."

The Mi Cocina business was launched by childhood sweethearts, Roberto and Varenka during the first national lockdown.

They met in Mexico but were then separated for years when Varenka moved to the UK in 2004. After meeting up again in Mexico after many years, Roberto followed Varenka to England to ask for her hand and bring her back to their home country.

Covid cancelled their plans and they made Winchester their home. Mi Cocina started as a takeaway, which steadily grew a community of regular customers.

The couple said: "We are super excited that we have found a new home in The Square. We are very grateful to the Winchester community for supporting us along our journey."
