THE 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal British Legion (RBL) was commemorated in Alresford by a small wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the grounds of St John’s Church.
As Alresford no longer has an active branch of the Legion, the ceremony was attended by representatives of the other armed forces organisations. Attendees were, from the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), Derek Sweetenham BEM, chairman, Alan Langford, standard bearer, Air Cdr Keith Monkhouse, president, Peter Colquhoun, Padre, and George Scott.
From the Royal Naval Association (RNA), David Ottley, chairman, and the RBL was represented by the local fundraising organiser, Sue Cox. Messrs Sweetenham and Ottley are also members. A short prayer was followed by the Last Post, a Silence, and the Reveille. This was played by George Skayman. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the three organisations.
