A CHINESE restaurant has cleaned up its act following a damning report when health inspectors found "dead insects" in the kitchen.

The Food Standards Agency, who inspected South Garden in Bell Street, Romsey, last year said an "improvement" was necessary and gave it a food hygiene rating of 2 out 5.

At the time, inspectors, who worked with Test Valley Borough Council, discovered the "tubes on the electric fly killer were covered in dead insects".

Now, the eatery has been awarded 5 stars by environmental health officers, who awarded the restaurant high marks for its food safety management.

The business was also praised in the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building category and scored a 'good' for its hygienic food handling when the inspection was completed on April 28.

This comes after Romsey Town Football Club was awarded 4 stars by health officials after no food hygiene and safety issues were noted in their latest report in October 2020.

The club was previously slammed by inspectors after they found "grimy" kitchen equipment in 2019.

However, the newest report commended the club for having a refurbishment since the last inspection, while recommending gaps between the ceiling and wall in the premise should be sealed.

Romsey Town Football Club's secretary, Alastair Bark, previously told the Advertiser: "We are delighted to have improved our hygiene rating. This and the other improvements to our facilities are a testament to the hard work of a team of dedicated volunteers.

"We have been fortunate enough to receive some great support and sponsorship from businesses in and around Romsey to achieve this.

"Without their generosity, the situation could have been much different. We are also working together with the council regarding these and further improvements."

Other businesses in and around Romsey also pulled up their socks last year after inspectors discovered their hygiene standards weren't cutting the mustard.

Some of the latest findings saw The Red Rover pub in Salisbury Road, Plaitford, climb from a 2 to a 5 rating, while Josie's Romsey, located in the Market Place, soared from 1 to 5.
