WINCHESTER Science Centre’s Year of Sound kicks off this month after as lockdown eases.

The centre has been closed since the Prime Minister closed all indoor leisure venues.

Children with a mind for mystery solving will be invited to take on a daring mission to uncover the truth about sound.

From Saturday May 22 to Sunday July 11, including May half term, super sleuths in training and their families can dig into the facts about how sound is created in nature in a brand new free live science show called Sound Detectives.

There will also be the chance to experience the magic of the UK’s largest standalone Planetarium, get involved in nature activities in the indoor/outdoor experimentation zone, Bio:Space and adventure through the brand new interactive sound and hearing exhibition.

A spokesperson said: "Only the best Sound Detectives will be able to deduce which sounds are natural and which have been manmade through the art of Foley in our brand new free live science show. Visitors will need to listen to the clues and sound out the truth before using their newly-found Sound Detective skills to investigate how different sound variables can change the way we hear some of nature’s most epic noises. And as this is live science there’ll be a whole host of awe-inspiring experiments and demos along the way, including the ‘super cool’ dry ice cannon.

"For an experience not to be forgotten, don’t miss out on taking in a show in the awe-inspiring Planetarium. For younger audiences there’s Simply Space, a magical journey through the night sky. Visitors will be able to spot stars, planets and even the Milky Way as an enthusiastic presenter tells captivating stories about the constellations appearing on the incredible 360 degree dome.

"And in The Planets Show, which is suitable for all audiences, the adventure will begin right here on Earth under a blanket of stars, before the audience is whisked into orbit to experience the impressive scale of the Solar System.

"And if that’s not enough fun for one day, head over to the indoor/outdoor experimentation zone, Bio:Space, to take part in some exciting nature-based activities, be wowed by the explosive demos in Science LIVE and embark on an exhilarating adventure through the Science Centre’s brand new interactive sound, hearing and vibration exhibition.

"Venture into an enormous 10m long guitar to feel the vibrations, experience the wonder of acoustics inside the sonic rocket and climb inside a giant ear to explore its inner workings. Laugh and learn together by making sounds in the huge echo tubes, discover more about decibels, rhythm and frequency and try your hand at British Sign Language.

"You can even join the rescue crew to save Humphrey the Humpback Whale and meet the experts in our bringing Research to Life zone, plus so much more."
