SIR: Such a joy to witness Winchester returning once more to a bustling and desirable place to live and visit (Chronicle April 15).

On Friday the Cathedral Outer Close was packed with people enjoying picnics, families and friends gathering together; majority observing social distancing.

The atmosphere reminded me of happy times prior to the pandemic and what joy to see a busy High Street, including many tourists. On Wednesday there was an outside market once again.

This is a time to celebrate a return to what Winchester has always been; a magnet for visitors to admire the historical past and optimistic future.
