POLICE have criticised more than 40 young people who flouted Covid restrictions by gathering in a skatepark.

Officers were also called to a group of employees who were celebrating a colleague's birthday "with a few drinks and a takeaway".

The incident at the skatepark occurred in Swanmore on Friday evening.

Writing on social media Police Community Support Officer Sarah McCulloch said: "It was really disappointing to see probably over 40 young people congregating - not one of them was social distancing.

"The skatepark should not be being used and signs are up saying it is closed.

"They clearly knew they were in the wrong due to the speed some of them left the area. Some started jogging, some started doing press ups.

"If any young people are missing helmets, I have two as during their haste they left them behind.

"Please if you are a parent or carer we still have government legislation and guidelines in place, so do ask where your children are going and who they are mixing with and remind them Hands, Face, Space.

"Remember we are still in this together."

Officers were also called to a Covid breach in Bishop's Waltham.

A police spokesman said: "A group of employees decided it would be acceptable to stay on to celebrate a colleague's birthday with a few drinks and a takeaway.

"All six people in attendance have been reported for summons. Not a happy end to a birthday."

Following action to disperse the group in the skatepark, Winchester police defended their decision in another post on Saturday.

A follow-up post said: "We noticed our post created a lot of debate. But can we just reiterate that even though children are spending a great deal of time together at school, they are still not allowed to socialise in groups.

"You can only spend time in outdoor public spaces for recreation on your own, with your household or support bubble, or with one other person.

"This means you can sit down for a drink or picnic. You must continue to maintain social distance from those outside your household.

"We totally understand that young people and adults are missing their friends, so are we. We are definitely still in this together."
