THIS Winchester primary school took on a mental health and fitness challenge – completing 28 miles in 28 days.

Pupils at Weeke were aiming to raise awareness of mental health, commit to fitness in and donate anything they could to one of the school's chosen mental health charities.

Oliver Cooling, Year 4, put together a montage video and contacted a special guest to introduce and summarise everyone’s efforts the video. This was none other than Joe Wicks.

“'I wanted to make the video so that we could all see each other during lockdown," said Oliver "I really enjoy making and editing videos and I learnt many new skills making the film. My mum emailed Joe Wicks to see if he would do a video for us but we did not expect to hear back from him. I was so excited when he replied to us.”

Each day, staff recorded videos published them to their YouTube, motivating the children to walk, run, scoot, dance and other activities.

Assistant headteacher, Kathryn Knapp and Year 5 Class Teacher Mike Weatherall orchestrated the challenge, named '#5FitFeb'.

Ms Knapp said: "Our children know that keeping active is a brilliant way to support wellbeing and to feel good about themselves. We came up with #5fitfeb to help our children and community connect with each other, have fun and get out in the fresh air to keep active and feel good."

Pupils submitted photos or videos via Google Classroom, their online learning environment to share with their class.

Mike Weatherall added: “It was fantastic to see the school community come together and complete all of our brilliant #5FitFeb activities. We felt it was important to highlight the importance of mental wellbeing and getting as many children moving around as much as possible”.
